Preparing your Car for Winter
Have us check your Fluids
Have your oil checked to make sure it’s at its proper level. Also, if you due for an oil change soon, schedule it. It’s best to do it now, before the cold hits.
Windshield Wiper Fluid
You will need this to wash away the slush and salt from the road that splashes up on the windshield. Normal wiper fluid can freeze in the cold weather. Make sure you stop in and let us fill it with a fluid that is specifically designed to be freeze resistant.
Your coolant system is also an integral part of your car’s heating and defrost. We can make sure your antifreeze is at the proper level. If it isn’t, we can fill it with the proper solution of water and antifreeze.
Also, check your owner’s manual. If it’s time to replace to get a flush and refill of your coolant, call and we will do it. Also, if you are unsure of the last time you had your coolant replaced, it’s best to play it safe.
Brake and Transmission Fluid
These need to be checked, too. If anything, so that you won’t be caught in an inopportune moment when snow is to your knees.
Have us check your Battery
Your battery terminals should be clean and have good contact. If there are any signs of corrosion, we need to clean them. The cold weather makes it harder for your car to start, and you can help alleviate that problem by making sure that you have the proper connection. Also, if your battery is 3 years or older, we need to test it to make sure it’s holding a charge properly.
We can lubricate your locks and the rubber seals around your doors. This will help prevent them from freezing.
Wash and Wax
A good wax can go a long way to protecting the body of your car against road salts. During the winter months, make sure you wash your car often.
Let us check your Tires
A visual inspection can help catch any maladies your tires may have during the winter season. Also, have us check your tire pressure each month as the pressure will change with the temperature.
You may also want to consider getting winter tires. The are specially made to grip better on wintry surfaces.
Consider having us change your windshield wipers to blades that are designed for winter. These handle the slush and cold better than normal wipers.
Bag of Sand
Carry a bag of sand, or even kitty litter, with you. You can use this for traction if your tires get stuck on a slippery surface.
